Pietre Dure

Pietre Dure
Pietre Dure meaning ‘hard stones’ , is a type of mosaic executed in coloured semi precious hard stones and is also referred to as ‘commesso’ work, which quite literally means joining together. The technique of Pietre Dure was celebrated by the Medici  and the best examples of Florentine mosaic can be found in Firenze ,at the Opifico delle Pietre Dure.
Pietre Tenere is an earlier technique originating  from Rome and uses ‘soft stones’. At Steve Charles we use both techniques to create exquisite floors, wall panels, bathrooms and furniture combing museum quality Pietre Dure works of art.
